Kellie Martin & Keith Christian
In Her Words . . .
May 15, 1999 We planned to get married outside, at Keith's childhood home in
Polson, Montana. And it poured all day. Everyone kept telling us to move the
wedding to the tent where the reception was going to be, but I said, "I'm not moving
it! We're in Montana to get married on the lake and I'm not getting married in a tent!
I don't care what happens!" We got all the guests umbrellas.
I had an amazingly beautiful Richard Tyler dress but by the time I got to the reception my train was
black with mud. I loved what I wore but, man, you could tell I wore it in the rain.
We had about 175 people, and my main objective was to make sure everybody had fun.
Our Methodist minister, Joe Keys, was the coolest guy--he made jokes during the
ceremony, like when I put Keith's ring on the wrong hand. We repeated our vows
after him, and I'm so glad. I could learn a million lines for anything, but not
for my wedding. I barely got the words out--I was literally getting choked up.
During the ceremony, Patti LuPone, whom I became friends with when we starred
on Life Goes On, sang "When Love Walked In" and "True Love." She had sung at my
Sweet 16 party, and afterward I had said, "Okay, the next time you sing it will
have to be at my wedding." At the reception, she sang eight more songs, including
the one we danced to, "Heaven."
It's so weird to say "my husband." I feel about 50 years old when I say it.
On our honeymoon, everyone called me "Mrs. Christian," and I was like, "That's
Keith's mom--that's not me!"
